Final piece of Supercars grid falls in place

Next year’s Supercars grid is all but complete with confirmation that Cameron Hill will join Matt Stone Racing in 2023.

Fresh out of the Super2 Series, Hill will join Jack Le Brocq at the two-car team which will run a pair of Chevrolet Camaro touring cars under the new Gen3 regulations.

Hill comes to the team with a wealth of experience having won the Australian Formula Ford Championship and Porsche Carrera Cup Australia.

Hill is set to become the first Canberra-based driver to compete in Supercars since Dale Brede’s sole season in 2004.

“It has been a goal of mine for years to compete at the highest level here in Australia,” said Hill.

“We have massive potential here at MSR. The team has been building towards Gen3 for some time now.

“Everyone will have brand new cars, and I see it as a big opportunity for myself and the team to make an impact. It’s the first time the playing field will have been level for years.

“I am grateful that Matt and the team see my potential and are giving me this opportunity.”

Hill’s confirmation is the final piece of the puzzle of the 2023 grid.

Other major changes to next year’s grid include the move of Tim Slade from the Blanchard Racing Team to PremiAir Racing alongside James Golding.

Slade has been replaced by Todd Hazelwood, who occupied the seat now set to be taken by Hill at Matt Stone Racing.

Lee Holdsworth’s retirement has opened the door for up-and-coming Kiwi driver Matt Payne to join Grove Racing alongside 2017 Bathurst 1000 winner David Reynolds.

Dick Johnson Racing, Erebus Motorsport, Team 18, Triple Eight Race Engineering, and Walkinshaw Andretti United will all field unchanged line-ups.

Although Brad Jones Racing has not announced its driver pool beyond Andre Heimgartner, it is expected no changes will be made at the Albury outfit.

That will see Bryce Fullwood, Macauley Jones, and Jack Smith return.

Outside of driver line-ups, Supercars will introduce two new cars for 2023.

The new-look Ford Mustang and the all-new Chevrolet Camaro will go head-to-head.

Walkinshaw Andretti United, which was once the factory Holden team, will now run a pair of Ford Mustangs.

Supercars has not announced a full calendar for 2023, although the season will open its account on the streets of Newcastle on March 10-12.

The championship will also feature on the undercard to the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne’s Albert Park on March 30-April 2.

This year’s season will conclude with the Adelaide 500 on December 2-4.
